Emma Raducanu Avoids Insect Repellent Over Doping Fears

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, recently experienced significant swelling and an allergic reaction from ant bites during her preparation for the Australian Open. Despite the discomfort, she chose not to use an antiseptic spray offered to her, expressing concerns about potential contamination and the risk of violating anti-doping regulations. This cautious approach comes in the wake of recent doping cases involving prominent tennis players. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner tested positive for the banned substance clostebol, which was attributed to contamination through his physiotherapist. Although initially found to bear no fault, the ruling is under appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Similarly, five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance. Investigations revealed that her melatonin medication was contaminated. An independent tribunal acknowledged her minimal fault, resulting in a one-month suspension. Raducanu emphasized the importance of managing controllable factors to avoid unintentional doping violations, stating, "It's obviously a concern on our mind... I was like: 'I'm just going to tough it out because I don't want to risk it'." Despite these challenges, Raducanu remains focused on her upcoming match against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Australian Open. She has been working on her physical development with fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura, aiming for long-term improvements in her game.
